Masterplaters: A Brief History

Although it is a bit odd in the Twenty-First Century to be part of a photographic collective, it was not so in the Nineteenth Century. Groups like the Linked Ring in England (founded 1892) and the Photo-Secessionists in the United States (1902) were a common way that photographers had of associating with other like-minded practitioners.

This group met at a workshop given in 2004 at Mass Art New England held at Bennington College where France Scully-Osterman was teaching a class on the wet-plate collodion process. Of the dozen or so students there the five of us found that we were like-minded both in our fascination with the process and in our attitude about the world around us. Meeting again as a group a year later at an advanced level class, the group was impressed by visiting the archives and research library at George Eastman House. It was at this point a critical mass of sorts was gained. The group, inspired by the camera clubs of the past, decided to form, dedicating itself to the exploration of imagery and experience utilizing the wet plate collodion process. Over the near decade of association we have worked together and apart, meeting once per year as a group for an intensive working, critiquing, arguing, laughing and learning session. We have hosted as many arguments as accords and have agreed and disagreed completely about aesthetic merits of the medium. We come from different traditions, points of view and parts of the country. We have weathered the viscisittudes of life as an increasingly endeared community of souls. We remain…
